Seven questions

Kia ora tatou

We'll begin the year by asking ourselves 'What is literacy'? and 'Why is it important'? These questions have nothing really to do with what year you are at in school--in fact, English teachers and university professors also frequently ask these questions!

In groups, we'll discuss the following questions:

1. What is literacy? (What do we need to learn at school?)

2. Why do we study English at school?

3. What do we want to learn in English?

4. What do we like to read?

5. What do we like to watch?

6. What kind of writing skills do we want to learn? (Why do we need them?)

7. What kinds of books, poems, stories, articles, films do we want to work with?

Our class come up with a number of reasons for studying English:

1. We want to know how to read novels and poems.
2. English is an international language used by people all over the world. By improving our English skills we improve our ability to communicate.
3. We need good English for our future careers.
4. English develops our thinking skills--we need to know how to make intelligent comments about what we see and watch.
5. Ana wrote: What is the point of learning English at school?

"Well you have a better understanding of the English vocabulary and also you have the confidence to stand in front of an audience and speak confidently everyone needs to take English because it is one of the main subjects that would help people in everyday life. You can also get jobs that have to do with English language."
